Vacation Special - St. Maarten Carnival
Costumes and dancers jam and jump their way along the streets of S
t. Maarten's capital Philipsburg to the beat of calypso. While
watching this four mile long parade for the colours and glitters its not possible not to get in the party spirit that we call
carnival.Preparations for carnival usually begin to warm up just before Christmas with the Calypsonians releasing sneak previous of the songs for the event. In the Carnival Village, Calypsonians from all over the Caribbean come to compete for the title of Soka King or Queen. After the crowning, the revelers hit the
streets for the Jouvert jam, a parade of music and dancing through
the street starting at 4 am and goes until sunrise.To close festivities of the carnival, the traditional King Momo, a straw figure who is the manifested spirit of carnival burns. Legend says that by burning King Momo the villages' sins and bad luck are burned away leaving island pure and filled with hope for good things to come.
Carnival brings the whole island together residents and visitors alike there is no such thing as a bystander. Anyone can join in the celebrations and feel the carnival spirit move through them.
